“Resolution of Peripheral Neuropathy Associated with Acute COVID-19 Infection Following Benfotiamine and Methylcobalamin Supplementation: A Case Report,” by Richard H. Mann, DPM, DABPS, ret., and Vanessa Nieves, DPM, ABPM, was published July 31, 2026, in Medical Research Archives, the journal of the European Society of Medicine (Volume 14, Issue 7).
The report describes a 51-year-old female physician who developed severe painful peripheral neuropathy in association with acute COVID-19 infection. She reported that her pain was 10/10 and that it persisted despite treatment with gabapentin and an opioid-acetaminophen medication. Following supplementation with benfotiamine, a derivative of vitamin B1, and methylcobalamin (vitamin B12), the patient reported complete resolution of her neuropathic symptoms within three weeks. There has been no recurrence of her symptoms during the subsequent three years of follow-up.
“Peripheral neuropathy secondary to COVID-19 infection is likely much more common than currently recognized. Practitioners should take a history of COVID-19 infection into consideration when evaluating patients with peripheral neuropathy,” said Dr. Mann.
Dr. Mann and Dr. Nieves note that the case adds to the developing literature on neurological complications following COVID-19 and supports further investigation of nutritional approaches directed at nerve function and cellular energy metabolism.
This report describes a single case. Adequately powered, controlled clinical studies are needed to determine the efficacy of benfotiamine and methylcobalamin in the management of COVID-19-associated peripheral neuropathy.
